SMART CARD AND MIFARE CARDS

A smart card or a chip card  is any pocket-sized card with embedded integrated circuits. The card is made of plastic, generally PVC, ABS plastic or Polycarbonate. Smart cards can provide identification, authentication, data storage and application processing. The benefits of smart cards are directly related to the volume of information and applications that are programmed for use on a card. A single contact/contactless smart card can be programmed with multiple banking credentials, medical entitlement, driver’s license/public transport entitlement, loyalty programs, access cards and club memberships to name just a few. Multi-factor and proximity authentication can and has been embedded into smart cards to increase the security of all services on the card. For example, a smart card can be programmed to only allow a contactless transaction if it is also within range of another device like a uniquely paired mobile phone. This can significantly increase the security of the smart card.

Smart Cards are broadly classiflied into three cotegories

Contact Smart Card :

Contact smart cards have a contact area of approximately 1 square centimetre (0.16 sq in), comprising several gold-plated contact pads. These pads provide electrical connectivity when inserted into a reader. Within the Contact Smart Cards there are two categories viz. Memory chips and processor chips. Processor chips are used for greater security applications like financial cards, High security access cards etc. Memory chips are used for low security applications like frequent flyer cards, Loyalty Cards etc. Few common smart chips are Siemens SLE4442, SLE4428, Gemplus, HID etc. These cards can use various operating systems like JCOP (Java Card Operating System) or Open Smart Card Development Platform (SCDP)

Contactless Smart Card :

A second card type is the contactless smart card in which the card communicates with and is powered by the reader through Radio Frequency Induction technology (at data rates of 106–848 kbit/s). These cards require only proximity to an antenna to communicate. They are often used for quick or hands-free transactions such as paying for public transportation, low security access cards etc without removing the card from a wallet. One of the commonly found contactless smart card is the technology from Philips called the MIFARE technology.

Hybrid Smart Card :

Dual-interface cards implement contactless and contact interfaces on a single card with some shared storage and processing. Hybrid cards may be a combination of different technologies in the same card sharing the data storage space. They can be a combination of magnetic stripe, contact smart chip, contactless smart technology, Datastrip, mifare etc

Various Applications using Smart Card technology

Loyalty cards, Club membership cards, Gift cards, Telephone cards, Hospital card, Security badges, health cards, National ID Cards, Electronic passport,  Transit card, drivers license, Child ID, Student ID, Access Cards, Bank Cards, Epurse, medical cards

A typical Campus Card Application can have the following uses.

Tracking student attendance

As an Electronic purse to pay for items at canteens, vending machines etc

Meal Management System : Tracking and monitoring food choices at the canteen, to help the student maintain a healthy diet

Accessing and Tracking loans from the school library

Using common facilities like Common Printers, Photocopy machines etc

Accessing Games area or indoor facilities like swimming Pool or Tennis courts etc
